A probe is now underway in France that will examine a 7-foot piece of wing from MH370, the Malaysia Airlines jet that disappeared in March of last year.

AFP reported via Yahoo News that the piece of metal wreckage washed ashore on the French Indian Ocean island of La Reunion on Wednesday covered in barnacles. The wing part, known to aviation types as a "flaperon," was determined to be a match for the missing plane after paint color and maintenance records were examined.

"Today, 515 days since the plane disappeared, it is with a heavy heart that I must tell you that an international team of experts have conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris found on Reunion Island is indeed from MH370," Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak said in a televised address.

Malaysian officials have now asked Reunion's neighboring nations, Mauritius and Madagascar, to help them search for other pieces of the plane.

France had previously opened an investigation of the missing airliner, as four of its citizens were on board when it disappeared. A spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor’s office, however, said that Malaysian officials have not shared with them any information gleaned during its own investigation.

"We’ve been asking for information from the Malaysians for a long time," the spokeswoman said.

With the wing part now in its possession, however, French counterterrorism judge Alain Gaudino began on Wednesday an examination of the wing part at a high-tech military lab near Toulouse.

"[L]aw enforcement authorities from Malaysia, diplomats from China and Australia, French transportation police and the French air safety investigation agency," will all be present for as the examination continues, the Wall Street Journal reported.
