Metta World Peace, the former NBA star born Ron Artest, is planning to change his name to "The Panda's Friend" to commemorate his arrival in China after signing a one-year contract to play with a team in the Communist country's basketball league.

World Peace teased fans about the moniker change on Twitter Monday.

On Wednesday, ChinaDaily.com broke the news about World Peace incorporating "Panda" into his name.

"The new, high-profile import, who is going to play for the Chinese Basketball Association club Sichuan Blue Whales, is known as Ron Artest, but intends to change his name to 'Panda Friend' in honor of his move to China, Changsha-based sports weekly newspaper Titan Sports reported," wrote China Daily.

"Apparently excited by his China trip, the 'Panda Friend' tweeted he would be visiting the pandas with his daughter, while also adding that he would be changing his name in honor of his move," the article continued.

But, on Thursday, World Peace issued a slight correction to the ChinaDaily.com story.

China Daily reported that World Peace's signing was big news to its avid basketball fans, noting that there were 8.96 million search entries for "Metta World Peace signs with CBA" recorded on Baidu.com.

Artest legally changed his name to Metta World Peace in 2011, but the New York Daily News reported that it's not clear if the new "The Panda's Friend" name will be changed legally, or whether it's simply a temporary thing to mark his time in China.

World Peace, who has played for six NBA teams including the Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, and New York Knicks, has averaged 13.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.8 steals during his 15-season NBA career, according to the Los Angeles Times
