Bradley Cooper snagged an Oscar nomination for his dazzling portrayal of Navy SEAL marksman Chris Kyle in the box-office bonanza "American Sniper," but his part was just the latest in a long list of other memorable war movie roles.

Here's a look at 13 of other unforgettable roles:

1. George S. Patton ("Patton," 1970) - George C. Scott won a Best Actor Oscar for his captivating portrayal of the heroic but controversial American World War II general.

2. Capt. John Miller ("Saving Private Ryan," 1998) - Tom Hanks earned a Best Actor nomination for his role as an American officer who faces numerous obstacles, and ultimately death, leading his squad in a seemingly impossible search for a U.S. soldier in France.

3. Col. Hans Landa ("Inglourious Basterds," 2009) - Christopher Waltz gives a spellbinding performance as a German officer in Nazi-occupied France during World War II in this Quentin Tarantino film. Brad Pitt is also memorable as American Lt. Aldo Raine.

4. Gunnery Sgt. Hartman ("Full Metal Jacket," 1987) - R. Lee Ermey won kudos for his gruff role as a brutal, abusive drill sergeant preparing troops for action in Stanley Kubrick's Vietnam War film.

8. William Wallace ("Braveheart," 1995)
