Melissa Benoist's 'Supergirl' Costume Gets a Street-Style Update

Melissa Benoist's Supergirl costume was revealed last week, with the edgy, dark look credited to Oscar-winning designer Colleen Atwood.

Atwood, who won costume design Academy Awards for "Into the Woods," "Snow White and the Huntsman," and "Sweeney Todd," gave the old DC Comics Supergirl look an update for the upcoming CBS pilot, which started production last week, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Producer Warner Bros. Television released the first look of former "Glee" star Benoist all suited up.

"In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today," Atwood told The Hollywood Reporter.

Benoist's costume will look familiar to those watched the 2013 Superman reboot "Man of Steel," ScreenCrush's Kevin Fitzpatrick wrote for Comic Alliance.

"CBS' 'Supergirl' borrows a page or two from Henry Cavill's 'Man of Steel' costume with a darker, scaly tone and muted colors," he wrote. "Also notable is that Kara's new look keeps conservatively covered, right down to the stockings, where most comic treatments of 'Supergirl' often showcase skin on the legs or midriff."

The "Supergirl" pilot will feature Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The publication said Dean Cain, who played Superman in the television series "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" from 1993-97, and Helen Slater, who starred in the titular role in 1984's "Supergirl," will both make cameo appearances.

"Supergirl" is a candidate for a spot in CBS' 2015-16 series rotation, with Benoist playing Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-El, Superman's 24-year-old cousin who escaped from Krypton and decided to embrace her own super powers and come out of hiding.
