Russian beachgoers in Mechnikovo shared the sand with a military hovercraft over the weekend after the 550-ton ship came plowing ashore amidst hundreds of sunbathers.

The Russian defense ministry, which owns the beach, confirmed the vessel was on a tactical mission when it landed but said the shores should have been closed to citizens.

"Docking at the beach… is a normal event," a ministry spokesman told Russian news outlet Komsomolskaya Pravda via Google Translate. "What people were doing at the beach on the territory of a military [base] is unclear."

Video footage captured the moment the huge hovercraft pulled in to Mechnikovo beach, near Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea, before paratroopers disembarked and demanded that the beachgoers leave immediately.

Some beachgoers were reportedly visibly upset at being made to leave, with one visitor asking: "What are the reasons for such military activity on a Sunday?" according to Metro.

The Zubr-class hovercraft can reportedly carry sophisticated weapons systems, tanks, and as many as 400 troops.
