Maybelline stars its first man in a makeup campaign as YouTube star Manny Gutierrez was named this month as the cosmetics company's first male ambassador.

Maybelline follows in the footsteps of competitor Covergirl, who named makeup artist and social media star James Charles as its first male representative, Elle magazine noted. Gutierrez has 3 million Instagram followers and posts tutorials on YouTube, where his channel has been viewed 91 million times, the magazine noted.

Gutierrez, 25, who grew up in Southern California, told Marie Claire magazine that he struggled to get his parents to accept his interest in makeup.

"They were just like, 'If you're doing this makeup online, how do you feel like medical schools are going to be? Do you think they're going to accept you into medical school?'" he told Marie Claire for its "Beauty Boys" feature in May.

"They didn't understand then that it was my creative freedom."

Gutierrez told Marie Claire that he stopped attending church after his parents outted him as gay and offered counseling.

"I wanted to make them happy," he told the magazine. "I got straight A's in school. I was the perfect child, except this one aspect of myself. It was very, very difficult at first, but we got through it and here I am, lashes and all."

Charles, 17, told The New York Times in October that cosmetic companies have picked up on a growing trend and a new customer base by marketing to men despite the possibility of bullying.

"I see new guys on my Instagram feed every single day rocking amazing makeup looks and crazy out-of-the-box stuff," Charles told the Times. "It's a growing industry, and the population of boys in the industry is growing as well.

"As more and more guys come to light, the way the internet is, there will be people who don't agree. Those negative comments probably make people not want to do it, because lots of people take that stuff very seriously, which is totally understandable. Online bullying has been a huge problem forever. Men in makeup is becoming more widely accepted."
