Maui Shark Attack – 2nd in 4 Days – Leaves Woman Hospitalized

Monday, 05 Aug 2013 08:34 AM

By Alexandra Ward

A woman who was the second shark attack victim in Maui in four days is expected to make a full recovery after she was bitten on the torso Wednesday.

Evvone Cashman, 56, was going for a morning swim about 30 feet off the shore of Ulua Park Beach on the Hawaiian island of Maui around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when she was attacked.

"I must have had my hands up in front of my face. I think my head was above water, if I remember correctly. I don't know because it happened so fast. I didn’t see him coming. I didn't see him leave. He just came and hit me hard and bit me hard and I just took off to the shore as fast as I could," Cashman told KHON2.com. "He only bit once, and he let go right away."

Bleeding from a 15-inch wound from the middle of her spine to her neck, Cashman was able to swim to shore where bystanders tried to stem the flow of blood with towels. She underwent surgery and is recovering at an area hospital.

Marine experts say the murky, choppy water brought on by Tropical storm Flossie could have contributed to the shark attack.

"Because there's lots of food being carried in there, so they're coming closer the shore. The water’s murky, they're basically biting into anything that they sense it’s not a good time to be in the water," Waikiki Aquarium Director Dr. Andrew Rossiter told KHON.com. "[Tropical storm Flossie was] carrying concentrations of fresh water in there and the sharks can sense what's in the water, so they’ll be curious. The water visibility will be bad and they’ll be basically testing out whatever’s there and if you're in there, they'll test you out."

Kiowa Gatewood, 19, was bit on the leg July 28 as he was surfing off Oahu's White Plains Beach.

"I was sitting on my board, when all of a sudden I saw this shark come out of the water and grab my leg," he told KHNL. "From there, I had this instinct to like, hit it with my left hand and then it let go and turned around and swam away."
