Mark Lippert: N. Korea Says Slashing of SKorea Ambassador Was 'Deserved'

By    |   Friday, 06 Mar 2015 10:35 AM

The Thursday slashing attack of Mark Lippert, the U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, has been called "deserved punishment" by North Korea, which disapproves of America's joint military exercises with its southern counterpart.

North Korea's official state-run Korean Central News Agency issued the comments calling Lippert's attack a "knife shower of justice," according to National Public Radio.

A South Korean political activist carried out the slashing Thursday, leaving Lippert with a gash requiring 80 stitches across his face and a slice on his arm that required surgery. The American statesman tweeted this week that he's "doing well" in his recovery.

The suspect, identified as 55-year-old Kim Ki Jong, is currently in police custody, according to CNN. South Korean police official Yoon Myeong-Seong told reporters that the suspect had previously visited North Korea seven times between 1999 and 2007 and that officials are looking into a possible connection between his past visits and the Lippert attack.

"This incident is not only a physical attack on the U.S. ambassador, but an attack on the South Korea-U.S. alliance and it can never be tolerated," CNN noted.

Just last weekend, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un ordered his military to prepare itself for war against the United States after the joint exercise, which occurs annually between America and South Korea.

The New York Times reported that a number of left-leaning South Korean activists have criticized the joint military exercises there as well, charging that it provokes tensions with North Korea and harms reconciliation efforts between the two Korean nations, even though South Korea and the U.S. said the exercises are defensive in nature.
