A U.S. Marine was killed during live-fire training at Twentynine Palms, California, at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center on Friday and another Marine was injured.

According to Lt. Karen Holliday, a spokeswoman at the training center, the fatal incident took place a little after 5 p.m., the Los Angeles Times reported.

The Marine’s death was announced on Facebook on Saturday.

“We send our prayers and condolences to the families of the Marines killed and injured,” Brig. Gen. William F. Mullen III, the base’s commander, said in the Facebook post. “Our first priority is to support them during this difficult time.”

The Marine who died has been identified as Lance Cpl. Austin Ruiz, according to the Naples Daily News. He was 19.

“He did touch a lot of people in this community,” Austin’s father, Nell Ruiz, said, according to the Naples Daily News. “He was very loved by all of us.”

The training accident is currently under investigation.

U.S. Marines are sent to Twentynine Palms regularly to undergo integrated training exercises. These exercises include “firing live ammunition and other hazardous activities,” the LA Times noted.
