Man Sells Snow From Yard to Make a Buck on Record-Setting Accumulation

A Massachusetts man is selling snow from his front yard, capitalizing on the record-setting accumulation that has vexed the Northeast for most of this winter season.

Kyle Waring, of Manchester-by-the-Sea, a town on Cape Ann in Massachusetts, told Boston.com he launched ShipSnowYo.com after initially joking about sending the piles of snow in his front yard — along with everywhere else in his town — to friends and family.

"I put the snow in a plastic bag, and put that in tinfoil," Waring told Boston.com. "Then I put that package in an insulated container that's an inch and a half thick, and ship it overnight. It's sealed tight in Omaha steaks packaging."

The method of packaging is better because much of the snow he first tried to ship melted, reported Boston.com. While admitting that melting could still be a problem, Waring said the snow should hold up for about 20 hours.

"We're drowning in 5ft of snow," reads the ShipSnowYo.com website. "Trapped in our tiny a** apartments and dealing with 3-hour-long commutes . . . we desperately need your help getting this snow out of our city."

Waring said the 6-pound delivery can produce about 10 to 12 snowballs, according to Boston.com. He said while there is no typical customer, he found some companies have made the $89 purchases as gag gifts. He plans to continue selling the snow as long as there is interest, weather permitting.

Waring, a product manager at GSN Games in Boston, told BuzzFeed News, he makes two to four shipments a day to places usually along the West Coast, or places like Utah and Colorado.

"A lot of the packages are addressed to kids," he said. "My understanding is people are sending it to kids who have never seen snow before. This is their first chance to play with it."
