Man Punches Bear to Save His Dog, and It Worked

When a man punches a bear, it better be worth it. For one California resident, the risk was worth protecting his dog and his territory.

“Carl Moore is not a guy who scares easily,” wrote Ian Schwartz of CBS Sacramento. True words.

Moore heard one of his small dogs, a Chihuahua, whimpering outside, and when he went to investigate, he found that a bear had wandered onto his property.

“The man or beast that I run from ain’t been born, and his momma’s already dead,” Moore, 73, told CBS. “I ain’t run from nothing; I never have in my whole life and I ain’t going to start now,” he said. “And you’re not going to sacrifice my babies for some damn bear.”

When raising his hands and yelling didn’t scare the bear off, Moore went on the offensive. “He come up like this, and turned, boom, I hit him hard. Tyler said I damn corkscrewed his head,” he told CBS.

John Sargent, who’s known Moore for 25 years, told CBS, “Carl just smacks it, I couldn’t believe it.”

Sargent added to Fox 40, “He whips to the right and hit him with a right ... it was crazy.”

Sargent said Moore was more than able to take on the bear, being an ex-first recon Marine. “He’s been in barroom brawls, all kinda stuff,” he told CBS.

Moore also has worked as a bouncer in western bar. “This big right hand has sent a lot of people to the floor,” Moore told Fox.

Moore said he’d been missing chickens over the weeks, and was convinced the bear was getting them. Fish and Wildlife officials told him he could get a permit to shoot the bear because it was eating the chickens, Fox said.

“If it comes back I’ll call 911 and let the sheriffs do it because I don’t want to shoot no animal,” Moore told Fox.
