Man Drives Dead Girlfriend Across Country – With Her Seatbelt On

By    |   Monday, 09 Jun 2014 11:58 AM

A suburban Detroit man drove his dead girlfriend across the country after the woman died early on in the trip, but he still had someone to talk with on the trip from Arizona to Michigan – his 92-year-old mother was along for the ride.

Christine Gilbert, 31, died while her boyfriend, Ray Tomlinson, 62, and his mother were in the van. After they arrived, Gilbert was on the front passenger side with her seatbelt fastened and wearing sunglasses.

Louis Galasso, Warren police deputy commissioner, called Tomlinson's decision to keep driving with the dead woman in the van "bizarre" but not criminal, according to The Associated Press, and he won't be charged.

Authorities told the Detroit Free Press that Gilbert had checked herself out of a medical facility on May 28 before the trip. The newspaper said that along with other prescriptions she filled that day, she purchased 30 OxyContin pills. Authorities told the Free Press that bottle was empty when Tomlinson brought her to Michigan.

Police said they believed Gilbert got out of the vehicle during a stop in Flagstaff, Arizona, and may have taken to drugs.. Tomlinson told the newspaper that he was "in total denial" after failing to revive her during the trip.

WDIV-TV reported that the three left the Phoenix area June 1. The next day, Tomlinson told police that he was in a rural area in the early morning hours when he noticed Gilbert slumped over with a cold body temperature.

"He then does an Internet search via his phone," Warren Police Detective Sgt. Stephen Mills said to the newspaper. "He says he finds on the Internet that he has 48 hours to take her to a medical examiner or to a morgue."

Tomlinson said he decided to keep driving to get the body to the Macomb County morgue, just north of Detroit, within the 48 hours, reported the Free Press.

Tomlinson told the newspaper he and Gilbert met in the Detroit area but the relationship did not turn serious until they met again in Arizona after going their separate ways. He said she had moved to Florida would eventually come to be with him in Arizona.

WDIV-TV reported that the Macomb County medical examiner's office was waiting on Gilbert's toxicology report but authorities said a post-mortem examination shows no signs of foul play.
