Luton Airport Shut Down Briefly After Suspicious Item Found in Terminal

By    |   Monday, 08 Sep 2014 01:59 PM

A Luton Airport terminal building was evacuated Monday afternoon after a suspicious item was found in a security area.

The airport, located north of London, also suspended all incoming flights while the Bedfordshire police cleared a departure lounge in the country's sixth largest airport, Reuters reported. Britain just recently increased its terrorism alert level in the face of security risks posed by the Islamic State, the news agency noted.

The Guardian reported that passengers were led out of the airport's terminal after the suspicious package was discovered. Bomb-disposal experts arrived on the grounds to examine the package before issuing an all clear.

One passenger, Paul Green, who was waiting for a flight to Edinburgh, told The Guardian that the atmosphere at Luton was "pretty calm" throughout the ordeal, but added that that was probably because airport officials kept them in the dark about what was happening.

"Once everyone was out and it became apparent that there was no fire — because the first alarm said it was a fire alarm — everyone was fairly calm," Green told The Guardian. "There's been no update from anyone. If it wasn't for Twitter we wouldn't know anything."

A spokeswoman at London Luton told the U.K. newspaper that airport officials were concentrating on passenger safety but understood while there would be some discomfort.

"We understand passengers will be frustrated by the delays they are experiencing," the spokeswoman said. "We are working closely with the police to ensure passengers are not inconvenienced unnecessarily but we must ensure that the safety and security of all our passengers and staff remains our top priority."

The airport announced that it had reopened its terminal early Monday evening.
