Luna, a German Shepherd-Husky mix who fell overboard from her owner's fishing boat in early February, was found alive on San Clemente Island this week.

"She was just sitting there wagging her tail," said Sandy DeMunnik, spokeswoman for Naval Base Coronado, which is located on the Pacific island roughly 70 miles from San Diego.

"It looks like she was surviving on rodents and dead fish that had washed up."

The Associated Press reported that Luna, who is a year old, fell off of commercial fisherman Nick Haworth's boat on Feb. 10, and was presumed dead after days of searching.

"They were pulling in their traps, and one minute Luna was there, and the next minute she was gone," explained DeMunnik. "They looked everywhere for her. They couldn't see her. The water was dark, and she's dark."

Haworth searched the waters for two days, and Navy staff also searched for about a week.

Then, on Tuesday, staff arriving for work at the island's Naval Auxiliary Landing Field spotted Luna sitting by the side of the road. She had apparently swam the few miles to shore.

"Keep in mind, there are no domesticated animals on the island, so it was a stunning sight," said DeMunnik.

It turned out to be Luna, and the staff notified Haworth immediately.

"He was overwhelmed. He was so happy and grateful and thrilled," DeMunnik said.

Luna was flown to the mainland the following day, and reunited with her owner. She was a bit malnourished, but otherwise uninjured.

When she met Haworth, she had on a brand new dog tag, as she had lost hers.

It read: "For Luna, keep the faith."

"I always knew she was a warrior," Haworth wrote on his Facebook page, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune
