Lost at Sea for 12 Days: Man Rescued Off Coast of Hawaii

After being lost at sea for 12 days in a sailboat, a man was rescued Tuesday off the coast of Hawaii.

Believing the vessel had sunk, the Coast Guard called off the search for the 67-year-old fisherman on Dec. 1 to the dismay of the man's son who said, "I don't feel like he's dead," CNN reported.

Ron Ingraham was found this week 64 miles south of Honolulu and taken to the Hawaii island Molokai along with his boat, named Malia, on Wednesday.

"I'm sure he's going to go fishing as soon as he's able," his son, Zakary Ingraham, told CNN. "Like tomorrow."

Ingraham made a distress call on Thanksgiving saying that his boat was taking on water. But a search covering 12,000 square miles failed to locate the man.

Another mayday call from Ingraham was received by Navy ship USS Paul Hamilton, and the guided-missile destroyer then rescued Ingraham, who was weak, hungry, and dehydrated, but uninjured, according to The Guardian.

Zakary Ingraham "couldn't be happier" that about the rescue of his father, who he described as resourceful, physically strong and tough, CNN said.

"Rambo has a picture of my dad on his wall," he joked.

The Coast Guard posted a video of the rescue on social media sites.

The story also made the rounds on Twitter.
