Long Island could eventually be home to the nation's largest offshore wind farm after New York state energy officials approved the plan on Wednesday.

The Long Island Power Authority signed off on the plan that will be capable of providing power to 50,000 average homes, reported The New York Times. It will start with as many as 15 turbines, but will have room for as many as 200 of them on the 256-square-mile parcel.

Deepwater Wind, which has been working on offshore wind projects along the East Coast, will plan the Long Island wind farm.

"This is a big day for clean energy in New York and our nation," said Jeffrey Grybowski, chief executive officer of Deepwater Wind. "The South Fork Wind Farm will be the second offshore wind farm in America, and its largest. There is a huge clean energy resource blowing off of our coastline just over the horizon, and it is time to tap into this unlimited resource to power our communities."

The 90-megawatt development 30 miles southeast of Montauk is the first step toward developing an area that can build up to 1,000 megawatts of offshore wind power, said Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office.

According to the Times, developers must now map the ocean floor to find where and how to anchor each turbine. For power to begin flowing from the farm in 2022, construction must start by 2020.
