Lisa Ann Coleman Executed in Texas for Starving, Beating 9-Year-Old

By    |   Thursday, 18 Sep 2014 10:12 AM

Lisa Ann Coleman, a Texas woman convicted of starving her girlfriend's son to death in 2004, was executed on Wednesday night.

"I just want to tell my family I love them, my son, I love him," Coleman said, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and The Texas Tribune. "God is good . . . I’m done."

Pentobarbital, a lethal drug, was administered to the 38-year-old at the state's Huntsville Unit. Her time of death was 6:24 p.m.

According to KDFW Dallas-Forth Worth, five friends and family members witnessed the execution. No representatives of the victim were present.

The victim was 9-year-old Davontae Marcel Williams. His corpse was found July 26, 2004, starved and beaten to death. The ultimate cause of death was malnutrition and pneumonia. His body bore 250 scars and injuries, including cigarette burns. He weighed 35 pounds, roughly half the average weight of boys his age.

Coleman and the boy's mother, Marcella Williams, were charged with capital murder. Williams pleaded guilty in 2006, and received a life sentence.

Child Protective Services were aware of Williams' prior mistreatment of her children. Davontae and his sister Destinee were placed in foster care in 1999 after it was discovered he was beaten with an extension cord. The children were returned to their mother after she promised to stay away from Coleman, and she repeatedly evaded CPS by moving several times thereafter.

"It appears that CPS Region 3 [Dallas/Fort Worth] was performing at a minimum standard and often below standards," Brian Flood, former inspector general, said in a report to the governor. "When abuse or neglect was indicated in the file, only 30 percent of the time did CPS caseworkers implement the appropriate safety steps for the short term protection of the child."

Coleman is the sixth woman to be executed by the state since the death penalty was reinstated.
