Lindsey Vonn, U.S. Olympic gold medalist, was out-skiied on Sunday, taking third in the women's World Cup Super-G race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Lara Gut of Switzerland won the event with Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany taking second place.

The race narrowed Vonn’s lead for the overall World Cup title, putting Gut 87 points behind Vonn and Rebensburg 240 points behind, The Associated Press reported.

"I didn't have a good feeling for the snow. The flat light, the bumps and the spring snow, the whole thing combined to make me more hesitant than I normally am," Vonn said, according to the wire agency. "I played it safe, made it to the finish line healthy and I think that was the right decision . . . I am not in the position with the points where I have to risk everything."

Still, Vonn, who has won seven of the last eight Super-G races, set a record with her 42nd podium finish in a Super-G. She holds a record among both men and women with 27 World Cup Super-G wins.

"I knew that I didn’t ski my best, I didn’t risk everything and that’s what it took today,” Vonn said, according to Agence France‑Presse. "Lara had a really good run, and she risked it all."

Vonn is 10 wins short of the record of 86 World Cup victories set by Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden more than 25 years ago, CNN reported.

Vonn tweeted about the event afterwards:
