Lester Holt Emergency Gives Savannah Guthrie a Shot at 'Nightly News'

Brian Williams' replacement Lester Holt had a family emergency on Monday night, so "Today" co-host Savannah Guthrie filled in on "NBC Nightly News."

Holt announced Tuesday afternoon on Twitter that his emergency had passed, and that he would return for a full episode that night.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the one-night gig "passes for big news" because previous reports said that Guthrie was seriously considered as Williams' replacement. Guthrie could still be under consideration should he not return at the end of his six-month suspension.

When Williams was suspended without pay in early February, longtime substitute Holt stepped up to fill the role. Impressive to many is the fact that he's kept the show's ratings up since Williams' departure. With the ratings up, Guthrie's chances at the host chair might be narrowed.

If by fate Guthrie did win the host role, that "would free 'Today' producers to move Hoda Kotb to the franchise’s earlier hours with Matt Lauer, as they try to figure how to jump-start that show’s ratings, which continue to trail ABC’s 'Good Morning America.'"
