Lauren Hill, 19, the Mount St. Joseph University freshman basketball player who accomplished her goal of playing in a college game despite suffering from inoperable brain cancer, died Friday.

Hill's story gained nationwide attention as she fought cancer treatment while attending practice. After her story went viral, the game eventually had to be moved from Mount St. Joseph's tiny home gymnasium to the 10,250-seat Cintas Center in Cincinnati

The arena, home of Xavier University, sold out for Nov. 2 game which was won by Mount St. Joseph 66-55 with Hill scoring the first two points of the game, reported the Cincinnati Enquirer.

"God has a new game plan for Lauren Hill," Tony Aretz, president of Mount St. Joseph said in a statement. "Her light will continue to shine on us all as her supporters worldwide continue her mission of increasing awareness and finding a cure for DIPG (Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma).

"We are forever grateful to have had Lauren grace our campus with her smile and determined spirit. She has left a powerful legacy. She taught us that every day is a blessing; every moment a gift," said Aretz.

The Enquirer reported that the November game raised $40,000 for The Cure Starts Now Foundation and pediatric cancer research. Hill was credited with raising $1.4 million for cancer research.

WCPO-TV reported that Hill's health took a downturn in the last six weeks, but she still managed to attend a private ceremony in February where Mount St. Joseph gave her an honorary doctorate.

The television station said Hill became friends with Cincinnati Bengals' Devon Still and his 4-year-old daughter Leah as her cancer battle went public and they often supported and encouraged each other.

Celebrities and sports figures passed along their condolences on social media.
