Laura Plimpton, Martha Stewart's younger sister, died unexpectedly Wednesday after suffering a brain aneurism.

Stewart posted a memorial to her sister on her blog, Martha: Up Close & Personal, writing “Laura deserves the very best; she was an extraordinary mother, wife, and sister.”

Plimpton, 59, worked for Stewart for more than 25 years doing editing, research, writing, and photography work.

Stewart said their mother wanted to name the youngest of their six siblings Dorothy, but they convinced her otherwise: “We still don’t know why we didn’t like the name Dorothy, but Laura was beloved by all as Laura.”

Plimpton was going about her morning routine Monday when she suddenly felt ill and was rushed to the hospital with a massive brain aneurism, Stewart wrote. According to her living will, she was kept on life support, allowing her three children to say goodbye and preparations for organ donation to take place.

“We are so sad but also happy that Laura had the foresight to donate so many healthy organs to needy people,” Stewart wrote.

Plimpton is survived by her husband, Randy; her three children, Christopher Herbert, Sophie Herbert Slater, and Charlie Plimpton; and two sons-in-law, Timothy Long and Dan Slater.

Plimpton publicly supported Stewart after her 2004 conviction of charges related to an insider trading scandal, telling Larry King: “Of course I believe that she's innocent. You know, we're all capable of making mistakes. I think this thing was just on a fast train, you know? Just too fast.”

Twitter users expressed sympathy.
