Landscaper Killed By Wood Chipper as He Trims Trees in Florida

By    |   Tuesday, 24 Jun 2014 01:02 PM

A landscaper trimming trees in front of a house in southern Florida was somehow dragged into a wood chipper and killed on Monday.

"You hear about this stuff in the movies, but then all of the sudden it happens right outside your door step," local resident Joseph Horta told CBS Miami. "All the sudden I hear all these sirens and I look outside and I see some piles of blood. It was horrifying."

Police told reporters the team of landscapers saw the man get dragged into the machine, and immediately ran for help.

"A man outside my door was frantically waving his arms and then he ran off in the other direction," said Horta, who lives across the street from where the workers were trimming trees. "I’m thinking to myself, what happened?"

Davie Police Capt. Dale Engle said he'd "never seen anything like this," and that counselors would be made available to officers who responded to the apparent worksite accident.

"This is a gruesome scene. This isn’t something you see everyday. This isn’t something you can just go home and forget about."

He said that no foul play is suspected at this time, but an investigation is ongoing. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) also responded to take a look at the scene.

"It’s sad. The guys were working really hard and he just made a mistake I guess," said another neighbor, Linda Simmons.

A truck nearby the wood chipper read "Tree Tech." The Pembroke Pines-based company did not respond to calls from reporters.

The deceased man's name remains unreleased until the police can contact his family.
