Lamborghini SUV to Hit the Floor in 2018 as Company Pushes to Double Brand

A Lamborghini SUV will roll out in the next couple years with production taking place exclusively in Italy, the automobile company said Wednesday.

The production version will be released in 2018, according to BBC’s Top Gear. Lambo will construct 3,000 of the new cars, much more than its typical production; the company manufactured just 1,200 Aventadors and 1,400 Gallardos and Huracans last year.

According to Bloomberg magazine, that more than doubles the brand and sales.

The vehicle will be constructed in Lamborghini’s factory in Sant’Agata near Bologna, Italy, with plans to create some 500 new jobs and expand the facility there from 80,000 to 150,000 square meters.

Bloomberg reported that the ability to grow the plant comes as a result of tax breaks from the Italian government equaling up to 80 million euros ($87 million).

The Lamborghini SUV concept was first announced in 2012 with the name Urus SUV, a model that featured carbon fiber.

But now Lamborghini engineer chief Maurizio Reggiani told the BBC that it doesn't make sense to use much carbon fiber because of the already heavy weight of the vehicle. In proportion to the car itself, carbon fiber does not save much mass.

Lambo joins Bentley and Porsche as it moves away from sports cars and dabbles in family-friendly SUVs.

“We were always the bad boys in the car industry,” Lamborghini boss Stefan Winkelmann told the BBC. “We have a responsibility to create something which is unexpected and ahead of the peoples' dreams.”

Lamborghini’s last SUV was the LM002 — nicknamed the Rambo Lambo — which ended production in 1993, Bloomberg noted.

In order to save on construction, the chassis and several other components of the new SUV will be constructed at Volkswagen AG factories, Bloomberg reported. VW owns Audi, the parent company of Lamborghini.

“This is a proud moment for everybody in Lamborghini,” Winkelmann said at a press conference Wednesday, according to Motor Authority. “The introduction of a third model line endorses the stable and sustainable growth of the company and signifies for us the beginning of a new era.”
