Lake Mead Tread Water: Woman Survives 3 Hours in Lake During Storm

A woman was rescued after treading water in Lake Mead for more than three hours during a storm on Tuesday.

The woman had taken off her life jacket to swim in the lake when the storm hit, The Associated Press said.

The storm brought 8-foot-tall swells and prompted 70 distress calls. A game warden and a park ranger found the woman, who was in her 30s, in the middle of the lake at about 8 p.m.

"She still had so much energy," parks spokeswoman Christie Vanover said, according to the AP.

The woman’s husband, Mitch Calderwood, who had become separated from her while jet skiing, said he prayed the entire time rescuers searched for his wife.

“The storm came in so fast, it blew the jet ski away from her," he said, according to KLAS-TV.

Vanover said the sudden storm “came out of nowhere” with only five minutes warning. At least one boat sank in the high waters, but no injuries or deaths were reported.

Storms are expected during southern Nevada's summertime monsoon season, the AP reported. But the sudden onset of Tuesday’s storm surprised many.

"Life jackets and first responders saved lives today," Vanover said, according to KTNV-TV. "Visitors did the right thing when the storm came. They put on their life jackets, they moved to shore and they called for help when they needed it."
