North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un toured a submarine of the Korean People’s Army naval unit and allowed photographs of the visit to be released to the world Monday.

Reuters published a slideshow of the tour, during which Kim was photographed standing on the ship’s tower, looking through the periscope, giving guidance, and posing with officers and sailors.

According to the National Post, Kim offered navigation tips and issued battle orders on the Romeo class submarine, which was declared obsolete by the Soviet Union in 1961.

North Korea has about 20 Romeo class submarines, the National Post said. The ship was designed in the 1950s.

Kim emphasized the need to complete combat preparations, bolster underwater operation capability of submarines, and modernize and fortify bases, the Korean Central News Agency reported.

The dictator watched indoor trainings and personally guided a drill. He emphasized the need for political and ideological education of seamen.

“The commanding officers and seamen should clearly see through the motives of the hateful enemies watching for a chance to invade our land and put spurs to combat preparations, thinking about battles only," Kim said, according to KCNA.

The 1,800-ton diesel-electric sub is the largest submarine the communist North has, the Yonhap News Agency said.

Kim gave binoculars and automatic rifles as gifts to the crew.

Twitter users poked fun at the dictator.
