A 79-year-old Wyoming man who was struck and killed by a car over the weekend while trying to remove an injured rabbit from the middle of a highway wasn't the last person to recently die in attempts to help distressed animals.

William Kieren, of Laramie, was struck Saturday night while crossing a two-lane highway. He died Sunday at a hospital in Fort Collins, Colo., The Associated Press reported.

On Monday night, a 55-year-old South Carolina man was killed by a car while attempting to save his dog which had been struck by a car moments earlier.

Kieren had reportedly pulled his vehicle over along Wyoming Highway 230 when he was struck near the center line by an oncoming vehicle, according to a state trooper.

Laramie resident Samantha Brown, 25, struck and killed Kieren with her 2000 Chevy Impala, according to the Laramie Boomerang newspaper.

Brown told police she was in the process of changing lanes to pass Kieren's car, which was parked along the side of the road, when she struck him. According to police, Brown said she didn't see Kieren before hitting him.

The rabbit, which was still alive when police arrived, was subsequently put down by a trooper, the AP reported.

The South Carolina victim, Darryl Harris of Greenville, was reportedly in the process of bending down to pick up 1-year-old black Labrador retriever named Pepper when a 1995 Toyota hit them, killing both at the scene, Greenville County’s chief deputy coroner Mike Ellis told Greenvilleonline.com.

The incident is being investigated by South Carolina Highway Patrol.
