Kevin Sorbo plays an atheist in a new Christian film, but admitted he still doesn't quite understand why atheists are always "so angry."

According to The Christian Post, Sorbo's new film, "God's Not Dead," has been a runaway success. Despite a small budget of just $2 million, it's grossed $62 million in the box office since its March debut.

In a recent interview with Access Hollywood, Sorbo reflected on the film, in which he plays an atheist professor whose beliefs are challenged by one of his Christian students.

"I'm a Christian myself and had to play an atheist. I see the anger of these (atheist) guys on TV and it's like 'wow, how do you get so angry at something you don't believe in?'" he said.

"What's interesting is that people say students don't get persecuted in universities because of their beliefs but it does happen."

Sorbo, who starred in the 90's TV series "Hercules" and Gene Roddenberry's "Andromeda," said that he is especially puzzled about atheists concerns over public displays of Christianity around Christmastime.

"It's funny how they can get nativity scenes pulled down because they say it offends them, but they're offended by something they don't believe in. What offends 90 percent of the country is that they take down nativity scenes, but apparently the majority doesn't have a voice in the country anymore — so what are you going to do?" he said.

Nonetheless, Sorbo said he was extremely pleased with the project. The aim of the movie wasn't to preach to the choir. Instead, he said, it felt like the choir came together — like he was preaching with the choir.

"This movie is not to preach to the choir. We wanted the choir to come, and obviously they did."
