Kevin Fiala suffered a season-ending injury during an awkward crash into the boards in the second period of the second round of the NHL Playoffs Wednesday in St. Louis.

Sports Illustrated reported Fiala fractured his left femur during the Western Conference playoff game against the St. Louis Blues Wednesday night when he hit the boards leg-first chasing a puck with Blues defender Robert Bortuzzo.

The 20-year-old rookie from Switzerland was removed from the rink on a stretcher and taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, where he had surgery on the leg, SI reported. He is resting in stable condition and will begin rehab in Nashville soon.

The game was delayed with 18:14 left in the second period while Fiala was taken off the ice and while a new ambulance was sent to the scene, Sporting News reported.

"[Fiala] is extremely disappointed that he will not be able to help his teammates in their quest for the Stanley cup, but is looking forward to starting his rehabilitation upon his return to Nashville," the team said in a statement, SI reported.

Fiala had two postseason goals for the Predators. Nashville went on to win the game 4-3. Game 2 will take place Friday in St. Louis.

Twitter wished Fiala a quick and full recovery.
