Kenneth Tate: Security Guard Fired After Obama Elevator Incident

By    |   Monday, 03 Nov 2014 04:39 PM

Kenneth Tate, the armed security guard who rode in an elevator with President Barack Obama in September, was fired by his private security firm within a week of the incident, according to The New York Times.

The incident made the news after it was reported that an armed guard, who was originally and erroneously thought to have a felony conviction, was allowed near the president in violation of Secret Service protocol.

Tate shared his story with the Times, telling the newspaper he loved his job at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and that he was unaware he was breaking any regulations during the president’s visit.

Rather than focusing on the fact that he carried a gun onto the elevator, Tate said his employers were upset over the fact that after accompanying Obama to the presidential limousine, Tate started to take a photo of the vehicle.

“Angry Secret Service agents told him that he had gotten too close to the Beast, as the presidential limousine is known,” the Times wrote. “When the agents relayed to Mr. Tate’s bosses what had happened, they reacted angrily.”

“This was unjust and has been a nightmare,” Tate, 47, told the Times. “I’ve tried to rationalize it. It won’t go away.”

Tate said he wasn’t aware he wasn’t supposed to take a photo or approach the president’s vehicle, and as for the issue of the armed gun on the elevator, he was unaware that was a problem because he was always armed in his position at the CDC.

The Times said Tate’s former employers, Professional Security Corp., have not commented on Tate’s firing, saying only that the way Tate said it happened was "not correct." A company official did respond to initial reports that Tate had an arrest record, saying that he did not have any felony or misdemeanor convictions.
