Katrina Dawson, one of the two hostages killed during a 16-hour siege by a self-proclaimed Shiite cleric in Sydney, has been described by her law associates as a "brilliant litigator."

Dawson, 38, was balancing a successful law career with raising three children — Sasha, Oliver and Chloe — with her husband Paul Smith, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Dawson was inside the Lindt Chocolate Café with colleague Julie Taylor when Man Haron Monis, 50, entered with a gun and took the two women and 15 others hostage.

At a memorial, Archbishop Anthony Fisher of St. Mary's Cathedral in Sydney said Dawson was shielding her pregnant friend from gunfire at the time of her death, according to the Journal. Authorities have not said whether Dawson's wounds came from the gunman himself or police who eventually stormed the cafe.

"Katrina was one of our best and brightest barristers who will be greatly missed by her colleagues and friends at the NSW Bar," Jane Needham, president of the New South Wales Bar Association, said in a statement. "She was a devoted mother of three children, and a valued member of her floor and of our bar community."

The Australian reported that Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said Dawson was a friend of his family and that Dawson was a "head girl" at the Women's College at the University of Sydney where his mother-in-law Quentin Bryce was the principal from 1997 to 2003.

"In one of those examples of where the world's a very small place, Katrina's parents were at a family function on Friday night before the Monday," said Shorten.
