Kat Von D won't apologize for her "Underage Red" lipstick color, the tattoo artist declared in a long Facebook post explaining the inspiration for the name.

The controversy arose after writer Parker Marie Molloy questioned the name on Twitter, sparking a widespread debate and media attention, with some suggesting the name sexualizes girls under the age of consent.

The reality TV star and tattoo artist defended herself on Facebook, saying she wore a similar shade of lipstick when she was 16 and unable to go to a concert because she was underage.

“In the eyes of many (including my parents), it may have been inappropriate for me to be wearing lipstick. But i did,” she wrote. She went on to say: “To me, ‘Underage Red’ is feminine rebellion.”

The post had amassed more than 150,000 likes and 9,000 shares as of Friday afternoon.

“I am fully aware of my overly expressive, poetic, and sentimental tendencies at times — especially when it comes to naming shades and collections in my makeup line. But for that, I will never apologize,” she wrote.

Describing her lifestyle as one of celibacy, sobriety, conscious living and human rights, Von D took offense to “wild and horrific accusations proclaiming that any aspect of my makeup line would ever promote the degradation of women, statutory rape, sexual behavior, human trafficking, underage drinking, or even idealization of fleeting youth.”

Von D’s products are sold exclusively at Sephora, and the artist stood up of for the retailer, saying Sephora has no creative input on her brands.

Twitter users shared mixed reactions.
