An explosion in Kabul ripped into a hotel compound on Monday, heightening instability in the Afghan city.

One police officer was killed and four were wounded, Reuters reported. One Taliban attacker died when he detonated the truck bomb outside the Northgate Hotel, and two others were killed by police.

The hotel was being used by foreign military and civilian organizations, which the Taliban called a "place of vulgarity and profanity."

The explosion came a week after a suicide attack by Islamic State militants killed 80 people at a demonstration by members of the mainly Shi'ite Hazara minority.

Three attackers tried to enter the hotel after the explosion but were stopped by police, who killed two of them. The third detonated a suicide vest, CNN reported.

In late June, 30 Afghan police officers and four civilians were killed when Taliban suicide bombers attacked a convoy of five buses. The Taliban killed at least 14 foreign security contractors during another attack on a bus on June 20. On June 5, the Taliban took responsibility for killing seven people in an Afghan court.

The gun battle that followed Monday's explosion lasted several hours, the BBC reported. No one inside the compound was injured.

"I was about to go to sleep when the explosion happened. The power went off," local resident Inamullah Khan told the BBC. "It was a very big explosion. It was very big."

Andreas Wilmers, chief operating officer of Afghanistan Broadcast System, described the explosion as the "loudest and the most heavy blast" he has experienced during eight years in Afghanistan.

A similar attack occurred at the hotel in 2013, when a truck bomb breached the gate and gunmen stormed the compound, The Associated Press reported.

The recent explosion happened at about 1:30 a.m., and the resulting battle ended at 7:30, the AP said.
