Judge Lance Mason, a sitting Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court jurist and a former Democratic state senator, was arrested in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights and charged with "punching, choking and biting" his estranged wife.

Mason, 46, who has served as a Cuyahoga County judge since 2008, was charged with felonious assault in connection with an incident that happened Saturday, court officials told WJW-TV. Reports said he was charged with attacking Aisha Mason.

Cuyahoga County prosecutors told the television station that Aisha Mason, 41, sustained "serious facial injuries" in the alleged attack, which happened in front of their children.

"The Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court is aware of the allegations against Judge Lance T. Mason," Court administrator Gregory Popovich told WJW-TV in a statement. "We cannot comment further at this time. Judge Mason's criminal and civil cases will continue as scheduled. All parties involved should be prepared to move forward as planned."

After serving as an assistant county prosecutor and the Cleveland law firm Baker Hostetler, he was appointed to a seat in the Ohio House of Representatives in 2002 and then elected to the Ohio Senate in 2006, reported Cleveland's Plain Dealer.

He was appointed judge by then-Gov. Ted Strickland in 2008, telling the Plain Dealer at the time he left politics for "family concerns." Mason told the newspaper then that one of the couple's young daughters, who had been diagnosed with Down syndrome, had recently went through open-heart surgery to repair a hole in her heart.

The Plain Dealer reported that the couple opened Audrey's Chocolate shop in 2012 to bring in extra income to cover their daughter's medical expenses.

In divorce papers filed Monday in county domestic relations court, Aisha Mason charged that her husband "struck me in the face, yanked my hair, slammed my head into the dashboard and armrest of the car," according to the Plain Dealer.

Aisha Mason's attorney Joyce E. Barrett also filed for a civil protection order. The newspaper said she had received a previous protection order from Shaker Heights Municipal Court Judge K.J. Montgomery, ordering Lance Mason to stay at least 500 feet away from his wife and children.
