More details about Jose Fernandez's final night alive have been disclosed by authorities and friends of the Miami Marlins pitcher and the two friends who were with him when his boat flipped over off South Beach early Sunday morning.

The Miami Herald reported Fernandez argued with his girlfriend and partied at American Social Bar & Kitchen in Brickell before taking the fatal trip on the boat early in the morning. Friends Emilio Macias and Eduardo Rivera were with him on the boat and also died in the accident.

An autopsy has revealed Fernandez did not drown, as originally thought, but died from trauma when the boat crashed into a jetty sometime before 3:30 a.m. when the Coast Guard found the wreckage, Mashable reported. The boat was traveling 55 to 65 miles per hour and Fernandez was not behind the wheel.

Lorenzo Veloz of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said he did not believe alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash, Mashable reported. Toxicology results have not yet been released to the public. None of the men were wearing life jackets.

There will be no criminal case since all on board have died, but many want to know what led up to the crash and exactly what happened on that final night.

A friend of Rivero, Will Bernal, told the Herald he had texted Rivero that the boat trip was a bad idea and asked him not to go, and to try to calm Hernandez down. Bernal said Rivero had tried to get him to go on the boat, but he didn’t like the idea of boating at night and declined. Rivero and Hernandez had only been friends for a few months.

After canceling a game on Sunday to grieve, the Marlins returned to the field in an emotional final goodbye to Hernandez on Monday night. They outscored the New York Mets, winning 7-3.
