Jose Canseco, the former baseball star with a streak of wackiness, nearly shot off his finger while cleaning his gun at his Las Vegas home on Tuesday, leaving the digit  "hanging by a string" as he was taken into surgery.

"I heard the gun go off and saw his middle finger hanging by a string," his fiancΓ©e Leila Knight told the Los Angeles Times. "It will either have to be amputated or have full reconstruction surgery."

Knight said she called 911 as soon as she saw the accident. She said they wrapped a towel around the finger – the middle one on his left hand – and he was soon taken to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada. Canseco almost fainted a number of times during the ordeal.

Metro police Lt. Mark Reddon told The Associated Press that officers responded to a call of an accidental shooting shortly after 2:30 p.m. PDT.

The former Oakland Athletics outfielder is famous for admitting to his steroid use, carrying diapered goats in his car, and saying odd but hilarious things on Twitter.

He hit 462 career home runs and was a six-time All-Star. From 1985 to 2001 he played for Texas, Boston, Toronto, Tampa Bay, the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox.

Knight reported via Twitter that Canseco underwent surgery on Tuesday.
