Johns Hopkins University accidentally sent welcome letters to 294 undergraduate applicants who had, in reality, been rejected from the school.

"We very much regret having added to the disappointment felt by a group of very capable and hardworking students, especially ones who were so committed to the idea of attending Johns Hopkins that they applied early decision," spokesman Dennis O’Shea said, according to Bloomberg.

The congratulatory messages, which came two days after the students received rejections from the school, included information about such things as social networking sites and where to buy university gear, Bloomberg said.

Johns Hopkins, which admits 15 percent of applicants, followed up with an apology letter to those who mistakenly received the welcome message, The Washington Post reported.

Cathy Stephenson was angry about the mistake and wanted a personal phone call from the university to apologize, The Post said.

"You don’t crush somebody’s feelings twice," she said.

David Phillips, vice provost for admissions and financial aid at Johns Hopkins, said the misstep was the result of human error on the part of a contractor who pulled the wrong list of e-mail addresses.

Other schools that have made similar mistakes include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which in February sent messages about financial aid that included the line, "You are on this list because you are admitted to MIT!" before admissions decisions were made. Fordham University, Vassar College, and the University of California at San Diego  have also made similar gaffes in recent years.

Twitter users quickly reacted to the misstep.
