John Oliver is getting his own weekly HBO series following his summer-long stint as "The Daily Show" host while Jon Stewart was away.

The cable network announced Thursday that Oliver's show will offer a "satirical look at the week in news, politics, and current events." It will air on Sunday nights.

HBO President Michael Lombardo said the channel wasn't looking for another weekly talk show, but that changed after watching Oliver sub for Stewart this summer, while Stewart took a break to direct a movie.

"We weren't otherwise searching for another weekly talk show, but when we saw John Oliver handling host duties on 'The Daily Show,' we knew that his singular perspective and distinct voice belonged on HBO," Lombardo said in a statement. "We are extremely excited that John has agreed to make HBO his home."

HBO didn't announce the show's title or when it will debut.

In addition to his time on the Comedy Central show, Oliver has hosted stand-up specials like "John Oliver's New York Stand Up Show" and has a recurring role on the NBC sitcom "Community."

Oliver, 36, joined "The Daily Show" in 2006 and has shared three Emmy awards as a writer and performer on the program.

Other "Daily Show" alumni have also branched out to their own success, including Steve Carrell and Stephen Colbert.

"I'm incredibly excited to be joining HBO, especially as I presume this means I get free HBO now," Oliver said in a statement. "I want to thank Comedy Central, and everyone at 'The Daily Show' for the best seven and a half years of my life. But most of all, I'd like to thank Jon Stewart. He taught me everything I know. In fact, if I fail in the future, it's entirely his fault."
