The Northern New Jersey Council of the Boy Scouts of America will pay $18,000 and apologize to 9-year-old transgender boy Joe Maldonado, who was thrown out of a Cub Scout Pack last year because of organization rules about gender.

Maldonado was allowed back into scouting early in 2017 when the national office of the Boy Scouts organization changed the rule that stated that the gender on a person’s birth certificate determined whether that person could be a Boy Scout. The new rules state that the gender on someone’s application for the Scouts would determine eligibility.

The agreement Thursday settled Maldonado’s mother’s discrimination complaint with the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights.

“Joe is happy that they admitted they were wrong,” his mother told Bergen County, New Jersey, newspaper The Record.

Boy Scouts of America director of communications Effie Delimarkos said in a statement the organization was “happy to welcome Joe and the Maldonado family back into the scouting community,” The Record said.

“Moving forward, the BSA will continue to work to bring the benefits of our programs to as many children, families and communities as possible,” she continued.

The Northern New Jersey Council also agreed to align their procedures regarding transgender youth with the state’s laws against discrimination based on gender identity and expression, as well as distributing these rules to all New Jersey local councils, The Record reported.

The Boy Scouts reversed its ban against gay scouts and leaders in 2013.
