Joe Biden is backing Tom Perez to lead the Democratic National Committee, referring to him as the “best bet to help bring the party back.”

“He knows how to explain why our party’s core beliefs matter to the immigrant family in Arizona and the coal miner in West Virginia. That matters,” the former vice president said in a statement about the former Obama administration’s labor secretary, according to The Associated Press. “I’ve watched him work. I think I know his heart. That’s why I endorse him as the next chairman of the DNC.”

“I’ve known Tom Perez for a long time. He’s a man of integrity and vision,” Biden said, according to The Huffington Post. “And he knows what it means to be a Democrat – that we are a party that fights for economic fairness for working families and believes that everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity, regardless of who they are, where they come from, or who they love.”

According to a campaign aide, Perez has raised more than $825,000 toward his DNC bid.

Last week, Perez highlighted endorsements he’s received from top Texas Democrats, three of whom account for DNC votes.

“Tom Perez understands the complex challenges we have in Texas and understands the national party needs to make investments instead of treating Texas as an ATM machine,” said Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa, according to The Huffington Post. “Tom is a friend, and if he’s elected chair, he will speak to the broad tent of the party and has the experience to turnaround [sic] large complex organizations.”

Though an endorsement from Biden doesn’t account for an actual vote, considering only members of the DNC vote on the chair, it’s still a significant backing for Perez who entered the race just weeks ago, according to The Washington Post.

In November, Biden, who will continue living in Washington, made it clear that he plans to “remain deeply involved in helping shape the direction of the Democratic Party moving forward.”

Former President Barack Obama hasn’t officially endorsed any DNC candidates yet, but he has spoken highly of Perez in the past, according to The Huffington Post.

“Tom Perez has been, I believe, one of the best secretaries of labor in our history,” Obama said at his final press conference as president.
