Jodi Arias Must Pay Dead Boyfriend's Family $30K in Restitution: Judge

Jodi Arias, the woman currently serving a life sentence for murdering her ex-boyfriend in 2008, must pay the man's family $30,000 in restitution, an Arizona judge ruled this week.

The family of Travis Alexander initially petitioned a Maricopa County Court judge for $100,000 for reimbursement for their travel expenses during the Arias case litigation. On Monday, Judge Sherry Stephens ordered Arias to pay only $30,000 because Alexander’s family did not provide all of their receipts for the incurred costs, according to the New York Daily News.

"In the past, my experience has been that victims are unlikely to get the money when somebody has been sent to prison for so long because they don't have the ability to make it," Jennifer Wilmott, Arias’ attorney, said, according to the newspaper. Wilmott also acknowledged that in the course of her client’s life sentence, "eventually she'll be able to get a job making 10, 20 cents an hour so they can take money from that, but it's very small."

JodiAriasIsInnocent.com is devoted to raising money for Arias’ legal costs and for a potential appeal. However, the site run by Arias’ family is unlikely to yield enough money to pay the restitution she now owes.

Alexander's family did not attend court on Monday and, in their absence, Stephens settled on the restitution amount proposed by prosecutor Juan Martinez. The court then split the costs between the Alexander siblings, The Arizona Republic reported.

Arias was convicted of first-degree murder in 2013 for reportedly shooting and then stabbing Alexander 30 times. Prosecutors claim she murdered her on-and-off again boyfriend after she found out he had been planning on traveling to Mexico with another woman. She was sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of release.

"I would much rather die sooner than later. Longevity runs in my family, and I don't want to spend the rest of my natural life in one place," Arias said after receiving her life sentence, according to the New York Daily News.
