Months after an interview with then-candidate Donald Trump that ended with Jimmy Fallon ruffling Trump’s hair, Fallon addressed the backlash that followed and how it seems to have impacted the subsequent ratings of his "Tonight Show" ever since.

Fallon told The New York Times in an interview that the gesture was misinterpreted by viewers.

“I didn’t do it to humanize him,” Fallon said, after viewers criticized him for exactly that. “I almost did it to minimize him.”

The "Tonight Show" host didn’t exactly apologize for being too nice to Trump, as many viewers accused, but he did acknowledge their perception and how it made them feel.

“They have a right to be mad,” Fallon said, and acknowledged that he was upset by the backlash.

“I’m a people pleaser,” he told the Times. “If there’s one bad thing on Twitter about me, it will make me upset. So, after this happened, I was devastated. I didn’t mean anything by it. I was just trying to have fun.”

Although Fallon’s ratings have fallen off from previous highs and the decline has been at least partly attributed to his show being more apolitical than others in his time slot, Fallon says he isn’t going to become more hyperpartisan just to get better ratings.

“I don’t want to be bullied into not being me, and not doing what I think is funny,” Fallon told the Times. “Just because some people bash me on Twitter, it’s not going to change my humor or my show.”

Stephen Colbert's "Late Show" has now surpassed "The Tonight Show" in ratings, though "The Tonight Show" still dominates the 18-49 age demographic most advertisers seem to go after hardest, the Times reported.

Most on Twitter piled onto Fallon over being too friendly to Trump, but at least one thought it was time to get over the whole thing.
