Former President Jimmy Carter revealed Thursday that there is cancer on his brain, and that he would begin radiation treatment later in the day.

"I’m perfectly at ease with whatever comes," Carter said during a news conference at the Carter Center in Atlanta, according to The New York Times. "I do have a deep religious faith, which I’m very grateful for."

"I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't go into an attitude of despair or anger or anything like that. I was just completely at ease," he added.

Carter, 90, detailed that he had "four spots of melanoma on my brain," and said that he had a cancerous mass removed from this liver during an Aug. 3 procedure. The former president first revealed his general cancer diagnosis last week.

Carter's wife, Rosalynn, was in attendance, and said her husband's doctors had scheduled four radiation treatments at three-week intervals, and also mentioned an intravenous treatment.

Doctors became concerned about Carter's health in the spring, after he caught a cold while traveling in Guyana. Doctors noticed the cancerous liver mass at that time, however surgery was delayed for Carter's book tour.

The former president said that so far he has not faced much discomfort, and was relieved to find out that the cancer had not spread to his pancreas, as his family has a history of pancreatic cancer.

Presidential historians noted that Carter's news conference was unique, as most past presidents and public officials usually announce health issues with written statements.

Among Carter's well-wishers is current President Barack Obama, CBS reported.

"Michelle and I send our best wishes," Obama said in a statement. "Jimmy, you're as resilient as they come, and along with the rest of America, we are rooting for you."
