Jim Carrey has been named in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the estranged husband of his ex-girlfriend, which claims the actor was responsible for her suicide in 2015.

Mark Burton, who was still legally married to 30-year-old Cathriona White at the time of her death last year, charged in the lawsuit that Carrey, 54, used his "immense wealth and celebrity status" to illegally get the drugs that White used in the fatal overdose, People magazine reported.

Michael Avenatti, Burton's attorney, said in a statement that his client is also calling on the Los Angeles district attorney's office to launch an investigation into White's death, according to People.

"We look forward to the facts and evidence relating to Mr. Carrey's conduct and role in the death of Ms. White coming to light," Avenatti said in the statement.

White, who was born in Ireland, was working as a makeup artist when she was found dead in Sherman Oaks, California, on Sept. 28, 2015, according to USA Today. She overdosed on a mixture of prescription drugs, which included Ambien, Propranolol, and Percocet, according to a Los Angeles County coroner's office ruling.

"After obtaining these drugs illegally and under a bogus name ('Arthur King'), Mr. Carrey proceeded to provide the prescription drugs to . . . Cathriona White," the lawsuit alleged, according to USA Today.

The court documents claim that this continued even though Carrey knew that White was "prone to depression and had previously attempted to take her own life. . . . The result that followed was predictable and foreseeable."

Carrey issued a statement Monday about the lawsuit, according to E! Online, calling it "heartless" and an attempt to "exploit" him.

"What a terrible shame. It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man's lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honor against the evil in this world," the actor said.

"I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved. Cat's troubles were born long before I met her and sadly her tragic end was beyond anyone's control. I really hope that someday soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace," the statement continued.

Legal expert Troy Slaten told E! Online that it could take three years at the earliest for the civil case to ever go to trial, where Burton must prove that Carrey was the "proximate cause" of White's death.
