Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams Closes Shops, Pulls Products Over Listeria

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams became the second ice cream company to announce on Thursday a massive recall, closing all its boutique ice cream stores and pulling all products off the shelves after ice cream tested positive for listeria.

“We received the call that no ice cream maker, chef, or entrepreneur wants. A randomly selected pint of ours tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes,” the company announced on the front page of its website.” Out of an abundance of caution, we made the swift decision to cease all ice cream production and sales until we can get to the very root of the problem. We are enlisting the help of experts so we can identify the cause, eliminate it, and return as quickly as possible to the business of making ice cream. — jeni”

The announcement follows the continuing story of Blue Bell Ice Cream, which this week pulled all its products for possible listeria contamination, after trying to get the contamination under control for several months. Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the contamination is the same strain of a contamination found in 2010.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream is based in Ohio; the Nebraska Department of Agriculture discovered listeria in a random sample of the company’s ice cream, The Wall Street Journal reported.

“Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems,” a Jeni's press release said. “Although healthy individuals infected by listeria may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, infected pregnant women can suffer miscarriages or stillbirths.”

The second recall and widely spread news about listeria generated questions among many people.
