Jeb Bush Tops Hillary Clinton 48-46 Percent in Virginia Poll

Jeb Bush topped Hillary Clinton 48 percent to 46 percent in the battleground state of Virginia in a poll released Monday by the Wason Center for Public Policy at Christopher Newport University.

Bush leads Clinton in the poll in a head-to-head matchup after he trailed by five points, 48 percent to 43 percent, in a poll the center did in February, according to the Washington Times.

Virginia represents one of the important battleground states Republicans would need to take the White House back. President Barack Obama won the state twice with 51.2 percent of the vote in 2012 and 52.7 percent in 2008.

Since February, Clinton has faced questions about a private email account she used while serving as secretary of state and about foreign contributions to the Clinton Foundation while serving in the Obama administration.

"Battleground Virginia will live up to its name in 2016," said Tom Kramer, assistant director of the Wason Center for Public Policy. "In the face of a barrage of attacks from her real and potential Republican challengers, Hillary Clinton's once formidable position has weakened, as we knew it would. Even at this very early stage, the 2016 presidential election in Virginia is shaping up to be a closely fought contest."

While Bush, who has yet to officially announce his candidacy, has a slim lead over Clinton, Kramer stressed there is still no clear Republican front-runner in the race.

For the Republican nomination in the state, Bush had 17 percent followed by Marco Rubio with 16 percent, according to the poll. Christ Christie, Rand Paul and Scott Walker are hovered around 10 percent. Ted Cruz, who entered the race at Liberty University in Virginia, and Dr. Ben Carson are both at seven percent.

"The Republican field continues to be very fluid," Kramer said in the Wason statement. "While there are no break-out candidates yet, we do see a sorting taking place, with Bush and Rubio emerging as top-tier candidates, and Christie, Paul and Walker forming a solid second-tier."
