Jeb Bush tweeted a picture of a gun engraved with his name on Tuesday, igniting an online firestorm.

Bush did not provide much context for the picture, captioning it with just a single word: "America."

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, a strong proponent of gun control, tweeted back at the former Florida governor, writing, "80 sets of parents lost a child to gun violence today. That's America, @JebBush. Do something about it."

Elsewhere, journalist Glenn Greenwald tweeted, "This is basically a version of the self-posted picture that ended Anthony Weiner's political career," while British journalist Piers Morgan tweeted, "Are you f***ing kidding me??????"

Edward Snowden, the man who leaked the NSA's secret surveillance program, offered a standard online rebuke: "Delete your account."

While many accused Bush of pandering to conservatives, his campaign spokesman reported that the .45-caliber handgun was given to the former governor when he toured FN Manufacturing in South Carolina.

"We received lots of positive response from conservatives who are happy to support a candidate like Jeb who has an unblemished record and commitment to protecting gun rights," said Tim Miller, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The Journal noted that Bush was the only remaining Republican presidential candidate who didn't own a gun, but does now that he received the gift.

The Washington Post reported that the firearms plant itself has a long history that stretches back to Western Europe.

"Today, FN Herstal supplies countless arms to the U.S. military, including the popular M4 carbine as well as the M240 machine gun and the MK19 automatic grenade launcher," it wrote.
