Prison Birthday: Jayla Currie, Son Celebrate His First Year From Jail

Jayla Currie and her son celebrated the boy's first birthday in prison, complete with cake and presents, as part of the Indiana Women’s Prison WeeOnes Nursery program.

In prison for 10 months for drug charges, Currie is allowed to have her son with her full-time as part of the initiative.

“I spent my whole pregnancy thinking I couldn’t keep my son because of the amount of time I had to serve my sentence,” Currie, 23, told Yahoo Parenting. “To be able to have him here with me is wonderful. I’ve gotten to see Jayden reach all of his milestones. The most amazing one was watching him take his first steps. It still scares me to death.”

The unique Indiana program was born in 2008 in an effort to meet the needs of pregnant offenders who met certain criteria.

“The intent of the WON program is to provide parenting education and to ensure quality time to strengthen the mother-infant bond during the initial months after the infant’s birth,” the WeeOnes Nursery website said said.

WON provides rooms for the mother and the baby, with real furniture, Currie told Yahoo.

“There’s a bed, crib, dresser, closet, and a chair in our room. They try to make it as homey as possible for the babies,” she said.

Yahoo Parenting said one in 25 women in state prisons is pregnant, and one in 33 is pregnant in federal prisons.

A study of Indiana’s program, done by the University of Indianapolis, found that women who stayed with their babies in a prison nursery were more likely to keep custody once they got out of prison and less likely to be arrested again.

The 2013 report said Indiana’s WON program was one of just 10 in the country.
