James Taylor first hit the Billboard charts in 1970, but it wasn’t until this week that he finally notched a No. 1 album.

His first album of new songs in 13 years, "Before This World," has sold 96,000 albums, USA Today reported, citing Nielsen Music numbers. That’s twice as many as the second top-seller, Adam Lambert’s "The Original High."

"In the 45 years since Taylor’s breakout record — ‘Sweet Baby James’ was released in March of 1970 — 11 of Taylor’s albums have made it into the top 10 without ever making it to first place," Variety wrote. "According to Billboard, the only artist to achieve a No. 1 later into his career than Taylor is Tony Bennett, whose ‘Duets II’ claimed the top spot in 2011, a mere 54 years after the 1957 debut of ‘Tony.’"

"I want to thank you. I didn’t dare hope that this album could actually debut on the charts at number one," Taylor, 67, said in a "thank you" video he posted on YouTube. "It’s a totally new experience for me, and that’s saying something. And for that I thank you and your support and your enthusiasm and your interest. I really believe in ‘Before this World’; I think it’s an excellent album. It’s the best we can do. We’re celebrating all day long here. All week along, actually."

Many commented on the YouTube video to express their thanks to Taylor for his music.

"That's what you get for putting out a perfect album. You've had a few of those since 1970 but 'Before the World' really knocked the ball out of the park, so to speak. Every song on it melds beautifully into the next so we want to listen to it over and over," one person wrote. "You have a gift for poignancy unmatched by any of your peers and you bring that to bear on most of the songs here. Very few albums by anyone achieve what you managed 'Before the World.'"
