A fundraiser for James Robertson has raised more than $230,000 as of Tuesday afternoon to help the 56-year-old Detroit man who walks a total of 21 miles to work each day.

A story about Robertson’s daily trek in Sunday’s edition of the Detroit Free Press caught the attention of Wayne State University student Evan Leedy, who launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Robertson buy a car.

The campaign quickly surpassed the initial $5,000 goal and keeps climbing after the story went viral.

A flood of offers for cash, cars, bus tickets, and bicycles followed the initial story, which explained that Robertson has been making the 21-mile trek each work day for the past decade after his car quit running.

Robertson has a perfect attendance record at his job as an injection molder at Schain Mold & Engineering in Rochester Hills. But his $10.55 wage doesn’t leave enough to replace his car.

“Most people in that situation quit their job,” Leedy told MSNBC. “But he has been with his company for 10 years, and he didn’t want to give that up, and he does whatever it takes to get there.”

Robertson is seeking help handling the donations.

"We can now use this money to truly change James' life," Leedy told People magazine. "We can get him a nice place to live. A place he deserves."

Twitter users seemed inspired by the story.
