Jameis Winston to Cooperate in Rape Investigation, Says Lawyer

By    |   Wednesday, 24 Sep 2014 11:08 AM

Jameis Winston, the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback for the No. 1-ranked Florida State football team, will cooperate in the school's Title IX rape investigation against him, according to his attorney.

David Cornwell made the announcement on Twitter Tuesday, posting that he will advise the star quarterback, a projected first-round choice in the NFL draft, that he should comply in the investigation to clear his name.

In a new claim, Cornwell told Florida State officials in a letter that the woman at the center of the investigation demanded $7 million from Winston for her silence, through her attorney before going public, according to TMZ Sports on Wednesday.

In his letter to FSU officials, Cornwell charged that Patricia Carroll, the alleged victim's attorney, told him, "If we settle, you will never hear from my client or me again – in the press or anywhere," reported TMZ Sports.

In his correspondence, Cornwell said that after he rejected the offer, Carroll went to the media four days later, noted TMZ Sports.

The Title IX investigation is an outgrowth of a 2012 charge that Winston sexually assaulted a female student. Last December, state officials declined to file sexual assault against Winston after investigating the charges against him for nearly a year, but critics complained that the decision was made in middle of Florida State's national championship run and Winston's campaign for the Heisman Trophy.

USA Today reported that Florida State opened its Title IX investigation on the Winston rape allegation in August, and it could lead to the quarterback's suspension from the school, ending his collegiate football career there. The investigation requires a lower burden of proof than a criminal trial, USA Today reported.

"The real story here is that after her Colorado attorneys created a media frenzy alleging that Florida State University failed to comply with its Title IX obligations, Ms. [name redacted] had to come clean and admit that she previously refused to cooperate with the university's Title IX inquiry," Cornwell said earlier this month about the Title IX filing in a statement, according to AL.com. "We anticipate the same conclusion … Jameis Winston did not sexually assault Ms. [name redacted]."
